Mayor Nancy Kelly Retiring

After much thought, Mayor Nancy Kelly has decided not to seek re-election for the office of Mayor for the Town of Rolesville.
Mayor Kelly was elected to the Town Board of Commissioners in 1987 and was appointed to the position of Mayor by that Board to replace Joe Winfree when he retired in 2001. Mayor Kelly was then elected to a four-year term as Mayor in 2003.
The Town Commissioners and the staff of the Town of Rolesville wish to thank Mayor Kelly for her dedication and the time she has spent serving the citizens of the Town of Rolesville. A retirement dinner is being planned to honor Mayor Kelly for November 20th. Invitations will be mailed soon.

The Town of Rolesville has had an increase in the number of building permits over the past five years. Click here to view a chart tha'll show the numbers of permits by month over the past several years. If you should need further information, feel free to contact the Planning Department at 554-6517.

The town engineer is currently working on the bid package of the scope of the work that is to be completed. Work should begin in January or February of 2008.
This portion of the project will include a greenway system that will go around the entire property and work will begin for the clearing, grading, and leveling for future parking.

Rolesville Softball Fundraising Event

In an effort to raise funds for needy families over the holidays the Rolesville Police, EMS and Fire Departments held a fundraising softball game for all Rolesville Public Safety employees. The event was a hit and raised approximately $175.00. A fun time was had by all and with a close finish 15-14 a rematch to be held in November is eagerly anticipated.

Rolesville EMS began its annual picture fund drive on October 12th.

The drive has been held for over ten years to raise money for special projects that aren't able to be done without raising extra money.

The way the fund drive works is simple. For any contribution in the amount of $35 or more, the contributor is entitled to a certificate good for one 8X10 portrait. Summit Productions calls the contributors to set up appointments to take pictures at our station.

This year, every cent raised by the fund drive will go to the continued operation of the second duty truck. As many of you may recall, Wake County tried to take the second duty truck out of service earlier this year, citing a low call volume for the truck. We disagreed, saying that the truck was needed because of increasing call volume in the area and the length of time it takes to get another ambulance to calls in this area. After a lot of negotiations, Wake County allowed us to continue operating the ambulance, but said that we would have to support 100% of the costs ourselves. The picture fund drive is one of the methods we're using to accomplish this.

If you have any questions about the fund drive, please contact us at (919)554-3315.

Rolesville Town Center Project

The Town of Rolesville recently purchased five acres in downtown Rolesville. The new property is adjacent to 3.4 acres of existing Town property and Main Street Park. The land was formerly owned by the Rogers family and consists of several hundred feet of road frontage along South Main Street. Combining the properties the Town now has approximately 8.5 acres to construct a new Town Campus in addition to the 36 acres within Main Street Park. In the near future, the Town intends to begin planning the campus which will include at a minimum a new Town Hall, Police Station and several new amenities.

Located in downtown Rolesville and adjacent to the park the new Town center is located in an ideal location. Adjacent to Main Street Park, the new Town center will be within short walking distance to several key destinations such as the proposed Rolesville Community Center, Sanford Creek Elementary School and Granite Falls Swim and Athletic Club. The new Town Center is intended to be a key focal point in Rolesville and is expected to be part of a larger redevelopment effort for the entire downtown district.

Don't Mess with the Bull

greenway

For the second time in a week veteran Police Officer Lt. Anderson demonstrated his animal skills in dealing with a loose bull and two cows. The animals, apparently in search of greener pastures repeatedly escaped from their confines at Woodleif's and wandered off to the Village at Rolesville. Fortunately, the animals seemed to respond well once their owners came and herded them away.
Nevertheless, Rolesville Police Officers maintained their distance while trying to contain the animals in a large field adjacent to the Village at Rolesville. From the looks and size of the bull Lt. Anderson deemed it wise to not mess with the bull and chose rather to call in for reinforcements.

Widening of S. Main Street

Some of you may be wondering what's going on along South Main Street with all the construction barrels. The Town is widening South Main from north of Pine-Glo to Southtown Circle. In addition, to pavement widening the Town will be extending sidewalk and installing an underground storm water system. The project is expected to take about two months to complete.

New Rolesville Post Office Coming Soon

The US Post Office has announced its intentions of relocations its Rolesville Postal Facility to a 3,000 square foot or more building located at 3600 Rogers Road. The Town is very supportive of the Post Office moving to a new facility and feels that the new facility will be of great benefit to the community. The new location will be in a much safer location for vehicles and post office traffic and will also serve as a great location for the many new businesses expected to open up along Rogers Road. The picture of the building below is where the new post office will be located.

Incident Command System Training
(ICS 300 & 400)

The Rolesville FIRE, EMS, PD and Town Administration have recently concluded Incident Command System Training. The training is designed to better prepare the Town for all types of disaster through proper planning and implementation of a standardized but flexible response command mechanism. The incident command mechanism is designed to meet the demands of small or large emergency or nonemergency situations, represents best practices and has become the standard for emergency management across the country. A key feature of the National Incident Management System, ICS is often utilized for planned events, natural disasters and acts of terrorism.

The Ever Growing Rolesville Police Department

On September 1, 2007, the Rolesville Police Department moved into their new headquarters located at 204 Southtown Circle, which is in the Rolesville Commons Shopping Center. With the department growing as quickly as the Town itself, the meager accommodations at the old Police Department, which consisted of a three room, seven hundred square foot building, was not enough to provide adequate services to the officers nor to the citizens of Rolesville.

The new location is a beautiful 2,800 square foot facility equipped with up-to-date technology and new furnishings. The new Police Department gives the officers more room to spread out and also allows for the additional growth that is anticipated at the agency. It is estimated that within five years, the Rolesville Police Department will have at least 20 full time police officers. The officers are extremely proud of their chosen career and their professionalism and now they can be proud of their new office.

Chris Hatton K9 Officer

On October 1, 2007, a new police officer began his employment with the Rolesville Police Department. Chris Hatton comes to Rolesville from the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department where he was the Sergeant over their Narcotics Division. Chris is a very decorated officer with his most recent accomplishment of being named the North Carolina Narcotics Officer of the Year by the North Carolina Narcotics Enforcement Officer Association. Not only does Chris bring his vast experience and expertise in narcotics investigations, he also brings a great investigative tool with him that he will be utilizing for Rolesville, a nationally certified drug sniffing dog. The newest member of the Rolesville Police Department is named Ria, who is a two year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever. Both Chris and Ria will be giving demonstrations to civic groups and to the local schools, but their most important job will be helping to keep the streets of Rolesville safe. Chris and his wife, Glennis, and their two sons, Christian and Koby, will be residing in the Rolesville area.

New Police Uniforms

You may also notice another change in the Rolesville Police Department when you see one of the officers out on the street. We have changed our uniforms from the light blue shirt to the more traditional dark blue. This new uniform change coincides with the changing to the new department from the old. We just felt that the new department looks more professional and that the dark, traditional uniform color also looks more professional. We hope you like the changes, we sure do. Below we have Lt. Matt Anderson and Patrol Officer Amy Barnes sporting our new look.

New officer joins the ranks of Rolesville Police Department

On October 27, 2007, another new police officer began his employment with the Rolesville Police Department. Doug Millan comes to Rolesville shortly after retiring as a Training Specialist for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch, where he specialized in training law enforcement personnel in chemical analysis, detection and apprehension of impaired drivers.

Doug brings 30 years of law enforcement experience to the department with 15 years as a sworn officer with the Durham Police Department and 15 years with the State as a Law Enforcement Training Specialist. While working for the state, Doug maintained his police certification by working as a sworn Reserve Officer with several agencies and for the past five years with the Granville County Sheriff's Department.

Doug is a very decorated officer and he just received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Mike Easley. This award is the highest civilian honor and among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Some of the past recipients of this award include Charles Kuralt, Maya Angelou, Rev. Billy Graham, and Michael Jordan. Doug currently lives in the Raleigh area, but he has stated that he loves this area and is planning on moving here as soon as possible.
